Men Who Sing (12a)

Dir: Dylan Williams | UK | 2021 | 78 mins
Documentary

This screening is presented in partnership with Eastbourne Film Society (EFS). The screening on Saturday 20 August will be introduced by Mansel Stimpson, Chair of EFS.

Dylan Williams’ humorous, melancholic and highly entertaining documentary started out as a film about his father, but transformed into a portrait of the choir he sings with.

When 90-year-old Ed tells his son that he wants to sell up and sort out his funeral, Dylan feels it’s time to return to north Wales. He follows his father on his weekly chores, observing his rituals and most importantly, sitting in on his practices with Côr Meibion Trelawnyd, the Welsh-language all-male choir Ed belongs to. But the choir is facing a crisis – with an average age of 74, and suffering a haemorrhaging of the brass section, they must get new recruits in or face extinction. The hunt begins for ‘brown haired men’ in their 40s and 50s who can take the choir forward, and as their search intensifies, Dylan discovers more about the singers and their lives. Unashamedly nostalgic, but with a wry and pleasing eye for comedy, Men Who Sing is a fascinating portrait of a small community and the power derived from it.
