Dir: Oliver Hermanus | UK | 2022 | 102 mins
Cast | Bill Nighy, Aimee Lou Wood, Alex Sharp, Tom Burke
Bill Nighy gives a wonderfully sensitive performance in Oliver Hermanus’s (Moffle) Living. A poignant, deeply felt film of tremendous grace, it’s created from a screenplay by Kazuo Ishiguro, based on Akira Kurosawa’s Ikiru (in turn inspired by Tolstoy’s novella The Death of Ivan Ilyich) and produced by Stephen Woolley (Carol).
1950s London: A widower and civil servant, Williams (Nighy) is a lonely man who leads a quiet and simple life. But everything changes when he receives some shocking news. Embarking on a voyage of discovery, he meets seaside bohemian Sutherland (Tom Burke), opens up to co-worker Margaret (Sex Education’s Aimee Lou Wood), and launches a passionate campaign to make a difference to the world – and to live his life fully – before it’s too late.
“Bill Nighy tackles life and death in an exquisitely sad drama” ★★★★★ The Guardian
