Director: Akira Kurosawa | Japan | 1950 | 88 minsCast | Toshiro Mifune, Machiko Kyo, Takashi Shimura
This a Japanese Language film and will be subtitled.
The film that brought Japanese cinema to the world, this 88-minute firecracker proved a seminal assault on the notion of objectivity. Winner of the top prize at the 1951 Venice Film Festival and an Honorary Academy Award the same year, Rashomon explores the murder of a samurai and the assault of his wife in 11th century Japan – events which are recounted in wildly differing versions by those present at the eventual trial: the bandit, the treacherous wife, a passing woodcutter and the spirit of the dead samurai.
Through ingenious camerawork, the use of flashbacks and a radically non-linear structure, Kurosawa masterfully demonstrates the ambiguity and complexity of human nature. Brilliantly conceived and executed, Rashomon brims with action while incisively examining the nature of truth and the limits of justice.
